So, We’re Having a Session…

A Q&A session? Nope. A focus group? Nah. Whiteboarding, brainstorming, a jigsaw, team-building? Close, but not quite…..actually we’re having a jam session. With real musical instruments. Even got a banjo!

It’s the first in what will hopefully be a series of after-work jam sessions / social events here at the Sears UX shop in downtown Chicago.

The idea occurred to a group of us one day when we were brainstorming for an actual work project and some of the sidebar conversation turned to music. We realized that just about every other person (or at least it seems that way) we know in the office plays an instrument, sings or has an interest in music production. And then we thought about how much fun it would be to bring some stuff into the office and play after work.

So, here we are….

This first session will be taking a cue from the happenings at the Old Towne School of Folk music. We’ll be using the first half for a meet and greet time to get set up and learn some songs. The second half will be the opportunity to jam out. The set list includes Tom Petty, The Doobie Brothers, Van Morrison, The Soggy Bottom Boys and more.

We’re really hoping that this becomes a “thing” in the future. It’s great for getting to know the people that you work with in a way that you wouldn’t normally. There’s even talk about a Celtic session next month in time for St. Patrick’s Day. We’ll see how it goes.  Stay tuned (no pun intended)!

I had to leave before it got into full swing, but what a great idea. I am looking forward to hearing the ux Sears band at our next social event.

It was a really good time! Big shout out to everyone who came out to play last night! We had a melodica, a couple of guitars, bass, banjo and of course great vocals.

Special thanks to Mark Smith and Andy Magnuson from The Messengers for providing a rock solid rhythm section for the session. If you liked what you heard last night (and of course at the Sears Kenmore end of the year event) make sure to check them out at McGonigal’s Pub in Barrington. Full info is here:

So happy we’re finding new ways to be creative in the office. What a blast! Can’t wait to see The Messengers when they’re performing in the city on 2/21. Thanks to everyone who organized and helped make this a reality.
